Definition
Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks (DePIN) are blockchain-based protocols that coordinate distributed ownership and operation of real-world infrastructure — wireless networks, compute resources, energy grids, storage, GPS, mapping — using token incentives. Participants contribute hardware and earn tokens; clients pay for services. DePIN aims to break natural monopolies in infrastructure by distributing capital costs across many owners.
Why It Matters
Traditional infrastructure (telecom, energy, water, transport) is dominated by regulated monopolies with poor service and slow innovation. DePIN offers a path to leapfrog incumbents by eliminating centralized capex requirements — instead of AT&T spending billions on towers, thousands of individuals deploy hotspots and earn tokens. Advantages vs. Centralized Infrastructure
