Overview

Todd Lyons was the acting director of ICE from March 2025 until his resignation, effective May 31, 2026. He led the agency through Operation Metro Surge and the resulting accountability crisis, including the deaths of Renée Good and Alex Pretti and the subsequent state-federal legal conflict. He is best known publicly for refusing to apologize for Good’s death when asked directly by Rep. Eric Swalwell in congressional testimony.

Key Facts

Newsletter Relevance

Lyons exits as the accountability machinery begins producing results — a departure timed coincidentally or otherwise with the first criminal charge against a surge officer. His “NO SIR” moment is the most condensed public statement of the administration’s posture: no acknowledgment, no accountability, no apology. His successor will inherit an agency facing state prosecution and an evidence lawsuit.
